Gilles De Waele

Game Artist & Game designer

  • DAE Modular Environment

I’m Gilles De Waele-Van de Velde, a game designer and game artist with a passion for making and designing small, casual games focused on strong mechanics and bringing joy to groups of friends.

3D Work

Modular Environment

This environment was made using blender and adobe substance painter for the modular assets and unity to combine all elements including shaders, particles and sounds. I had never attempted a cave setting before so this environment was a new challenge for me, from figuring out the composition fit for a cave setting to vegetation, lighting and the overall atmosphere.

Robuddy

A small robot modeled and animated using blender and textured in adobe substance painter. This was also my first experience with rigging and animating a 3D model, trying to properly get the small movements right was really enjoyable.

Moustache Kart

A Kart inspired by the A-10, made using blender and adobe substance painter. For this I wanted to focus on slowly building up the textures to showcase the type of environment the kart would race in through the details in the materials.

Vēksta – Sword of growth

Vēksta is a sword based on world of warcraft weapon styles, while the modeling isn’t the most impressive, the handpainted texture is something I am still proud of.
This was a really good experience in learning how to mimic real life materials in a stylized way and how to layer textures.

Game Design Work

Who Let Him Cook

Who let him cook is a small singeplayer game where you play as a sausage in the pan of a horrible cook, doing your best to save the dishes by throwing out all the wrong ingredients.

I was responsible for the original concept and gameloop and then assisted with refining the experience.

Who Let Him Cook was a submission for the GMTK GameJam in 2023.

Hammer Splatter

A chaotic 1v1 game where you zoom around the map using momentum and spread the blood of your friend across the map by smashing and throwing with a giant hammer.

I was one of the 2 game designers on this project, focusing mainly on movement and player feedback.

Hammer Splatter was a submission for the CreaWeek Jam 2025

Current Project

Project Lightrunners

Project Lightrunners is a game developed in Unreal Engine where up to 4 players drive bumper cars that leave a fiery trail behind while trying to take each other out and be the last one standing. This project is made in collaboration with our client Abonneer.

For this project I serve as the manager, producer, game designer and assisting artist.

About Me

I’ve been interested in arts and games for as long as I can remember, playing on the wii with family and friends at gatherings and scribbling on every piece of paper I got my hands on I eventually ended up at Howest. Here I learned the basics for 3D and 2D art, game design fundamentals and producer skills.

Outside of making games, I am interested in sports, music, history, engineering… honestly everything. Because of this, I keep finding new inspirations to keep creating.
